This commercial first appeared in 1944 to educate Americans on bananas since this was a new and exotic fruit to North Americans at that time. The term "Banana Republic" is used to denote a politically unstable Latin American country that relies on exportation of a limited resource (like bananas). It is a pejorative term that suggests exploitation of a country's people by a foreign power with the help of a corrupt dictatorship.
